Simple Gifts to perform at New Life Church
Simple Gifts, two women who play 10 instruments, will perform at 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at New Life Episcopal Church, 13118 Church Ave. NW in Uniontown.The award-winning band, which features Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon, performs a variety of ethnic folk music, including Irish jigs, Klezmer music, Gypsy melodies and Balkan dance tunes. It uses an array of instruments, including violins, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, recorders, guitar, the bowed psaltery, baritone fiddle, banjolin, guitjo and doumbek.Hirshon and Littleton have performed as Simple Gifts since 1995. The group was established by Littleton in 1989 and has played in venues, including the Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Hershey Theatre, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Ontario Center for Performing Arts. Simple Gifts has recorded six albums, which include traditional music from Romania, Hungary, Russia, Bulgaria, Greece, Ireland, Scotland, France, Sweden, Denmark and American. The recordings also include original compositions by group members.The concert, which is free, is sponsored by a grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods or a monetary donation for the FISH food pantry of Lake Township and the Akron-Canton Foodbank.
